Greetings from Dr. T:
Do you have problems with your kidneys such as infections or kidney stones?
The kidneys are two of the most important organs in the body. They prevent the buildup of wastes and extra fluid in the body, and they keep levels of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and phosphate stable. They make hormones that regulate blood pressure, make red blood cells, and help bones stay strong. Diet and nutrition can play a major role in healthy kidneys.
Foods to include in your diet that will contribute to good kidney health include red bell pepper, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, onions, apples, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, red grapes, egg whites, fish high in omega-3’s such as wild salmon, herring, mackerel, rainbow trout, and extra virgin olive oil.
Does this list of foods sound familiar? They should, as they are all heart-healthy foods. The heart and the kidneys work closely together so it is no surprise that the same superfoods will help keep them both functioning well.
In addition to making good dietary choices, whole food supplements can assist your body in the healing process and they often can speed up the process. We can discuss this during your next appointment.
